Introducing Our 2011 Bostwick Scholarship Winner

Many of the women who turn to New Directions every year feel cornered in life, especially as single moms trying to put food on the table and keep a roof overhead. A dream of having a job that pays decently may seem a far off reality, especially if child rearing redirected time and resources from ones own education, skill building, hopes, and aspirations. Through the Center’s programs, fear mutates into financial independence and a sustainable career. When this happens, it is a time to celebrate.

This transformation takes place because of the many women who have walked this path before, and held the door open for the next woman who needed a helping hand of guidance and support. The Bostwick Scholarship, in honor of former staff member Anne Bostwick, continues this tradition as a living legacy that holds the door open for women like Marcella (Marci) Nugent.  Marci is a graduate of the Center’s E3 Program (Educate, Empower, and Elevate), and the 18th scholarship award recipient.

Marci exemplifies how a single mother can elevate her life through education. She is driven to transform her life and achieve both her personal and professional goals through education.

Nugent found her own meaningful career path by expressing what she has experienced, in a sense to hold open the door for those in similar situations to her own. She survived open heart surgery as a child and is now pursuing her Associate’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography Technology with an emphasis in Cardiovascular at Central Ohio Technical College. It will qualify her to administer EKGs, MRIs, and CAT scans.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States,” explained Nugent. “Because of my experience, I wanted to be in the cardiovascular arena in order to help other women combat this disease.”

Diana Westoff, Marci’s mentor, shared her comments of praise and encouragement: "Marci is a determined, strong and realistic woman. She has consistently pursued her return to school to continue her education and personal/professional development. Way to go, Marci!"

We are all proud of Marci’s accomplishments and I congratulate her on winning the 2011 Bostwick Scholarship!
