"Attitude is Everything" - Diane von Furstenberg

Life possesses a variety of unforeseen challenges for most of us. In fact, I doubt that there has ever been a truer statement. Divorce, aging, illness, job loss, financial hardship, death of a loved one – there are many surprising detours and unforeseen circumstances, in both our personal and professional journeys. Sudden changes and crises come into all of our lives . . . including mine. No one is immune.

Fortunately, at an early age, I made one critical discovery that altered how I experience adversity. What did I discover? Like so many women before me, I realized that the key to survival is how we consciously choose to deal with hard times. I learned that my mindset influences my reality – positively or negatively.

What does this mean? In my opinion, the most vital trait a person needs, to overcome harsh realities, is a positive, resilient attitude. Again, hardship visits all of us. Yet each of us must carefully decide how we respond to potentially debilitating events. Will we choose to be a victim of life’s changing tides or a survivor who ultimately thrives? Will these rough waters grind us down or polish our inner reserve? The answer to both questions resides in our individual attitudes.

Attitude influences so many of our experiences and, very often, dictates actual outcomes. More than talent or money or resources, it is our attitude which shapes experience. Attitude is why one woman is hired or promoted over another seemingly more qualified candidate. Attitude is why some women persevere in the face of overwhelming odds while others falter, never quite regaining their previous stride. We literally decide – each and every day – what experiences mean to us and how we will use them to further forge our identities.

As women, our birthright is one of enormous empowerment. We have tremendous, untapped resources within us. But it is up to us – no matter what our age or circumstance - to utilize that gift. When challenges arise, we can give away our power, allowing self-pity to wash over us – or we can call forth our inner strength and prevail, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of our former existence.

Choose a positive, resilient attitude as you climb the mountains of life. Nothing can defeat you!
